AMI/USA Bi-Annual Journal – Editor (At-Large)
Volunteer Role Description
The AMI/USA Bi-Annual Journal is a cornerstone publication that uplifts the voices, perspectives, and experiences of Montessorians across the United States. We are seeking committed and collaborative individuals to serve as Editors-at-Large on the journal’s editorial team.
Role Summary:
Editors-at-Large contribute meaningfully to the vision, content, and impact of the AMI/USA Journal. Working under the guidance of the Lead Editorial Guide and Assistant Editorial Guide, Editors-at-Large collaborate with fellow board members to plan and curate each issue, support contributors, promote the journal’s work, and uphold the journal’s commitment to authenticity, inclusion, and AMI/USA principles.
Essential Functions:
Network & Outreach: Actively build relationships within the Montessori community to encourage diverse and relevant submissions.
Theme Development: Collaborate with the editorial team to shape bi-annual issue themes that reflect the evolving needs and interests of the community.
Submission Review: Receive, review, and recommend submitted pieces for editorial board discussion and selection, voting collaboratively to approve submissions
Copyediting: Engage in standard copyediting to prepare accepted submissions for publication, maintaining clarity, voice, and accuracy.
Publishing: Engage in standard publishing activities to produce the journal in its finalized formats, as well as promotional material.
Editorial Meetings: Attend twice monthly virtual meetings to coordinate journal content and workflow.
Promotion: Help promote the journal across digital platforms and professional networks to broaden its reach and readership.
Contribution: Submit original work for consideration and support other contributors in the writing process.
Additional Involvement: Participate in other publication and promotional tasks as needed and aligned with personal skill sets.
Time Commitment:
Approximately 6–10 hours per month, including meeting attendance, editing work, outreach, and promotion.
Term Length:
This volunteer position carries a preferred term of 3 years.
Support & Training:
While prior experience in editing, writing, or publishing is preferred but not required, all Editors-at-Large will receive foundational editorial training upon the establishment of the board to support success in the role.
Qualifications:
Deep commitment to Montessori principles as outlined in the AMI/USA Strategic Plan, Statement of Inclusion, and related guiding documents, with a particular emphasis on upholding social justice principles.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Proficiency with the written word, art expression, or other creative media.
Experience in purposeful creative expression (written, artistic, musical, etc.) and a passion for crafting, executing, and presenting a collective vision.
Openness to learning editorial practices and tools in a supportive team environment.
