About Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni is one of this country’s most widely read poets and one of America’s most renowned poets world-wide. Nikki Giovanni was born Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, Jr. in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1943, but her parents moved to the all-black Cincinnati suburb of Lincoln Heights when she was an infant. She and her sisters spent the summers with their grandparents in Knoxville, and she returned there for her high school years. Her poem, “Knoxville, Tennessee,” is arguably the single literary work most often associated with that city. Her children’s books span the decades from 1971’s “Spin a Soft Black Song” to this year’s publication of “A Library”. We look forward to welcoming Nikki to our gathering for the keynote that will open our event.
On February 17th – 20th, 2023, we will gather on the unceded lands of the Piscataway and Susquehannock tribes, now known as Baltimore, Maryland. “The Charm City” is home to the Inner Harbor historic seaport, an abundance of museums, diverse restaurants and a rich history steeped in African American culture.
