Board Member Opportunities at AMI/USA
AMI/USA is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. AMI/USA is dedicated to bringing the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori to the education of children through its support and advancement of the AMI Montessori community in the United States. AMI/USA is a primary operational affiliate of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. With the support of AMI’s global network and initiatives, AMI/USA maintains the world view critical to the education of today’s children and to our responsibility to humans, not just within the United States, but across the world.
Through her scientific observation of children all over the world, Dr. Montessori found consistent, naturally developing tendencies and characteristics that would serve as the foundation for the creation of optimally prepared environments that would encourage and support the realization of children’s full potential.
About This Role
We are seeking Board members with robust backgrounds in the following areas:
- Finance
- Fundraising
- Grant Writer
- Research
- Non-profit Certification
- Marketing
- Political and Community Development
This position presents a unique opportunity to contribute to our mission, and support and promote excellence in board service. Board meetings are held four times annually, and members attend in person (preferred) or virtually. In addition to general board responsibilities, our ideal candidates will bring substantial expertise, experience, and insights into financial sustainability.
Requirements
AMI/USA is looking for individuals with a passion for Montessori education. Ideal candidates are expected to:
- Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs.
- Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings.
- Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for AMI/USA to advance its mission and collective purpose.
- Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve AMI/USA’s mission.
- Give a meaningful personal financial donation.
- Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing and influence public policy.
- Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.
- Participate fully in one or more committees or task forces.
- Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community your organization serves.
- Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences on to the board and into the boardroom and the organization.

We are looking for mission-aligned individuals with strong collaboration, communication, implementation, and strategic skills, and a commitment to equity and inclusion, and expertise in one or more of the roles listed above.
Volunteer Board
This is a volunteer, unpaid position for a term of three years, with the option of serving a consecutive three year term. Members dedicate their time and expertise to support AMI/USA and its mission and collective purpose. Join a passionate group committed to helping children achieve their potential.
