AMI Trained Primary Guide

Guide/Teacher,

Whole Child Montessori Center

Whole Child Montessori Center of Portland, Oregon seeks an AMI certified and experienced guide for a position in one of our two primary classrooms beginning in August of 2021. Whole Child has been serving Portland families for over 35 years, and we are dedicated to a continued tradition of authentic AMI Montessori practice in an inclusive, supportive, and loving community. Over our long history, Whole Child has employed only five guides in two classrooms; these opportunities come along only rarely because Whole Child has managed to create a place where guides want to be long term. It is ever our goal to uphold that standard, and we hope to find the right fit for the next decade and beyond!

At Whole Child, we believe that the more each classroom community is representative of society at large in its diversity, the more the whole community will benefit; in the same spirit, we seek diverse perspectives and experiences in our staff community. Whole Child does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, or gender identity or expression in any activities or practices, including hiring. We believe that a diverse staff of qualified, dedicated individuals is necessary to best achieve the vision and mission of our school. We welcome and encourage applications from qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of our small community across a range of dimensions, as well as those with a willingness to engage in anti-bias and equity work.

Whole Child is a small nonprofit school made up of only two primary classrooms for children aged 3-6. The guide in their role will have the opportunity to:

• Work in a small, close-knit, collaborative environment.

• Join a strong, established community and be part of sustaining a safe, intimate feeling of connection for Whole Child families.

• Utilize a fully integrated, diverse and vibrant Children’s Garden with free-flow all morning long between the indoor and outdoor environments.

• Take full advantage of a beautiful, well-equipped space purpose-built to be a Montessori Children’s House.

• Feel supported in pursuing areas of interest through professional development.

Whole Child operates as a school and does not offer before- or after-care. Preschool-aged children attend 8:30am-12:30pm, and kindergarten-aged children in their third year stay for the “Montessori Extended Day” until 2:30pm. Whole Child typically follows the Portland Public Schools calendar, and summer employment is available during a six-week summer program, but not required.

This position is salaried starting at $43,000, with a competitive range depending on experience; it is exempt and benefit-eligible. Candidates must be entered in the Criminal Background Registry and must complete state-mandated health and safety trainings in compliance with childcare licensing. Candidates should feel confident not only meeting the professional and emotional demands of the guide position, but the physical demands as well, including lifting, bending, reaching, and comfortably working at the child’s level for extended periods of time.
