This interactive presentation aims to critically reflect on the current understanding of classroom management, reframe foundational tenets and practices, and explore alternative strategies that provide the conditions for freedom and support the child’s natural needs and tendencies. We aspire to empower participants to reimagine classroom management by emphasizing the Montessori approach to community building over traditional compliance-based methods and grow the audience’s understanding of the importance of aiding in the life of the child.
The discussion will focus on the roles of the prepared environment and the prepared adult, helping participants differentiate and appreciate the Montessori approach. Attendees will leave with practical tools and strategies that align with Dr. Montessori’s vision of creating conditions for freedom and self-construction in the classroom.
- Explore Paradigms: examine the differences between conventional classroom management paradigms and Dr. Montessori’s approach to fostering freedom within prepared environments.
- Community vs. Compliance: contrast the concept of building community with traditional compliance-driven management techniques. Examine how our own needs can impede our efforts to build community.
- Redefining Behavior: offer a new perspective on behavior by focusing on understanding and supporting the fundamental needs and tendencies of the child.
- Prepared Environments: introduce methods to cultivate prepared environments that promote self-construction and create conditions for freedom.
- The Montessori Advantage: highlight the power of Dr. Montessori’s approach to nurturing community, positioning it as an aid to life rather than a system of management.
- Techniques for Community Building: share actionable techniques for building classroom communities that support the conditions for freedom and align with Montessori principles.
This session is designed to deepen understanding, inspire change, and provide concrete strategies for educators committed to creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that honor the developmental needs of the child.
