About the Association Montessori International

Founded in 1929, the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) has the distinction of being the only Montessori organization founded by Dr. Maria Montessori. Known for its rigorous teacher-training program along with a strong set of standards for school accreditation, AMI Montessori education is time-tested and has been successful over many years in the United States and throughout the world. One of AMI/USA’s most important tasks is professional development. AMI/USA organizes two large annual conferences in the United States, the Refresher Course and the Public School Forum.

Leadership Meeting

A meeting of Montessori leaders was convened by the McCall/Kulak Foundation in New York on December 5 and 6, 2011. AMI was represented by Andre Roberfroid, AMI president, Virginia McHugh Goodwin, executive director of AMI/USA and Janet McDonell, AMI/USA board member.

The participants issued this statement to share with members:

The Education Leadership Forum and the McCall Kulak Family Foundation invited a small group of Montessori leaders, from various organizations, to meet in New York City for 2 days. The purpose of the meeting was to explore common ground and to identify specific ways to align and strengthen the Montessori movement in the US. This groundbreaking meeting set a fresh, collaborative tone. It was intimate and productive.

  • We identified the varied constituencies that have a stake in the advancement of Montessori.
  • We began to explore how to better understand and meet the needs of these constituencies.
  • We discussed specific strategies for advancing the Montessori movement and to prioritize next steps.
  • We identified some steps towards a collective research strategy, mapping Montessori groups across all 50 US states, and towards unified messaging.

We are excited to take this first step and look forward to the unfolding of this effort to change US education to focus on the development of the whole human being. We would like to thank the Foundation and the Forum for bringing us together and facilitating our conversation.
